About the book:
Colombian history is not only one of violence, it is one of hard working people who despite adversity are able to look at the bright side of life and overcome social, political and economical troubles. However, we cannot ignore the impact of violence in Colombia, and how it has shaped the way in which the country has become. Soaked in Blood offers a close up into the reality of perpetrators, victims and those who stood against violence in a country that has shed blood for more than sixty years.
All seven chronologically arranged chapters follow a certain formula. First, each chapter tells the story of how a regular Colombian citizen was in some way affected by the violence. Second, it tells the story in the life of a notorious historical figure that altered the life of that citizen and the country as a whole. Its graphic format allows for symbolism and emotion to be part of the visual platform while keeping true to its historical content.
The chapters touch upon a different range of stories; from nefarious events such as the assassination of the paramilitary’s main leader Carlos Castaño by his own brother to tragic stories of regular people like the one of Gumercindo Alvarez, a United Fruit Company worker killed by the Colombian military in the nineteen twenties. From accounts on the renowned drug dealer Pablo Escobar to the struggles of a Jane Doe prostitute monitored by guerillas, these popular and little known stories weave together a web of violence throughout the history of Colombia.
Acknowledgments:
Since I can’t do this in the book, I’ll do it right here: I was able to do this book thanks to the guidance and support of two professors that I had the honor to call my mentors and have now the privilege to call my friends: Dr. Benavides and Dr. Garcia del Soto. I thank all my family and friends that supported and encouraged me to do this, especially Liz and Xiao for giving me their comments and Tyler for helping me with the editing of the first chapters. Thanks to Mama Cecilia and Mama Regina for their support and love. And Last but not least, thanks to my life support system Cam.
